Understanding the Different Types of Editing

Every book goes through different stages of editing before it is ready for publication. Each editor focuses on a different part of the writing process, from the big-picture structure of the story to the smallest grammatical details. Down below you will find details about each editors process.

Developmental Editing

Developmental editing focuses on the overall structure and content of the story. A developmental editor looks at the bigger picture, including plot development, pacing, character growth, world-building, and the overall flow of the book. They may suggest changes to scenes, chapters, or story direction to help strengthen the narrative and improve the reader’s experience.

Line Editing

Line editing focuses on how the story is written sentence by sentence. A line editor helps improve clarity, tone, and style while preserving the author’s voice. This type of editing refines the writing so that sentences flow smoothly and the language feels natural and engaging.

Copy Editing

Copy editing focuses on technical accuracy and consistency. A copy editor reviews grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, and formatting. They also check for consistency in names, timelines, and details throughout the book.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final stage of editing before publication. A proofreader reviews the finished manuscript to catch any remaining spelling errors, typos, punctuation issues, or formatting mistakes that may have been missed during earlier edits.

**Editor Pricing**

Editors working with Crystal Coast Media & Publishing operate as independent professionals and set their own service rates. Because each project is different, pricing may vary depending on the length of the manuscript, the type of editing required, and the time involved.

Authors are encouraged to communicate directly with editors to discuss their needs, request quotes, and determine the best editing service for their project.

New Illustrator: Joslynne H.

Visual and Performing Arts have always been a part of Joslynne’s life. Growing up in

Buffalo, NY, she was guided by two creative parents—an engineer and a teacher—who

taught her how to bring ideas to life on paper. After being accepted into a Visual and

Performing Arts specialty school, art became not just a skill, but a lifelong passion and a

favorite outlet. Now living in the DMV, she enjoys creating in a variety of styles, from

realistic portraits to decorative pieces, using a rich palette of earth tones, bold colors,

and classic black and white.
